Academy of Ancient Music

Period-instrument ensemble

The Academy of Ancient Music is one of Britain’s foremost period-instrument ensembles. Taking its name from an 18th-century society, AAM looks to the past to inform the present, drawing on scholarship to play music with a deep level of historical understanding.

AAM is led by its current Musical Director Richard Egarr, for whom the 2016-17 season marks his 10th anniversary at the helm. The ensemble also regularly collaborates with other world-renowned scholars and performers including Mahan Esfahani, Robert Levin, and Alina Ibragimova. Over the last four decades since its foundation it has been at the forefront of historically-informed performance, with 300 recordings to their name and a busy concert programme. AAM is currently an associate ensemble of the Barbican Centre, making it their exclusive London home from 2012. Highlights of the 2017-18 season include a major tour of North America, and the continuation of their Purcell opera cycle.
